Most schools run their training courses on board 32 - 38 ft yachts with five students and the Instructor, meaning space is at a premium, and teaching time is restricted. With us at FOLSS - four students and a 48ft Ocean cruising yacht provide plenty of space and time for a really high standard of tuition to be provided. Students are required to do the catering as well as all the other chores on board. Northern Wanderer has a professional cook who is able to provide excellent food and make life on board that bit more pleasant. Students are asked to help with domestic tasks as part of their training - even learning on board cooking skills can be an enjoyable part of the course.
You will be principally taught by David Leaver, an experienced sailor and mariner with an enormous amount of sea time, who is totally familiar with the waters and the conditions of the West Coast of Scotland. We hope to provide a mature, considered and caring approach to the way we introduce our students to the skills needed to cope safely with learning to sail a yacht. Our vessels are well kept, spacious and equipped to modern standards. We do not fill our boats to capacity but keep to a maximum of four students for practical courses. Private tuition for both sail and motor cruising is available with David who is a RYA/MCA Ocean Yachtmaster Instructor for sail and motor cruising and also an Advanced Powerboat Instructor
Sail training is held aboard "Northern Wanderer", a large 48ft ocean going Westerly Oceanmaster, with plenty of space and a high degree of comfort and stability. We restrict student numbers to four despite her size!
RYA Power boat level 2 courses are held on a regular basis at the school at Dunstaffnage marina - call for details. One day RYA shorebased VHF, 1st Aid, diesel engine and Radar courses are regularly held at the marina.
The sailing area is the best in the world - lovely islands, special harbours and if you want - no crowds, unlike the Solent and Clyde, with isolated anchorages and wonderful scenery as a backdrop to your training.
